The Greenies
Who are the Greenies?
The Greenies are a group of students in the Primary School (PYP) that strives to increase awareness regarding climate change and sustainability. We used to meet once a week, but this year we have chosen to take on different responsibilities under the guidance of teachers.
We want to focus on:
- Collecting paper for recycling
- Collecting card for recycling
- Promoting a 'Foil Free PYP'
- Finishing the Greenhouse
The Greenies have been out and about the Primary Years Classrooms and collected nearly three kilos of non-compostable waste from snacks and lunches.

These pictures show some of the typical packaging that they found. We discussed the possible options of reducing this waste. A lot of the packaging was from individual yoghurts, juice drinks, etc. These could be bulk purchased and put into reusable plastic containers.
Other solutions include using:
a reusable lunch box,
reusable sandwich or food wrappers,
a reusable drinks bottle,
a cloth napkin,
reusable cutlery,
paper wrapping, or
the new school lunches.
We will be working together with 'Roots & Shoots' on the Greenhouse and other projects.
