EMAS Accreditation
What is EMAS?
The European Union's Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) is a voluntary management tool for companies and other organizations to evaluate, report, and improve their environmental performance.
Any organization, private or public, including a school, that is dedicated to improving its overall environmental performance can participate.
To receive EMAS accreditation, the organization must:
- conduct an environmental review;
- establish an effective environmental management system;
- conduct an environmental audit;
- provide a statement of environmental performance.
EMAS at CIS
In the 2009/2010 school year CIS organized a team of students who conducted a school-wide environmental review. The students received CAS hours for their work. The students worked with Fintan Keenan, MYP Design Technology teacher. CIS fulfilled the preliminary expectations to recieve EMAS accredidation, and in the future aims to recieve an accredited third party audit to make it official.
Because the goals of EMAS and the Green Flag programs overlap, CIS can hopefully achieve both!
