The Green Flag, an
environmental acknowledgement awarded by “Friluftsrådet” was raised by Gentofte
Mayor Hans Toft before a large crowd of parents, students and teachers at Copenhagen International School, just before the summer break.
The flag raising was the
culmination of much hard work lead by teachers Fintan Keenan, Faye McAuley, Simon Watkin and devoted parent
volunteer Leslie Nogaret. CIS has
been working for nearly two years towards it’s application for the Grønt Flag,
a symbol of our membership as a Grøn Skole, part of a world wide organization
of ECO Schools.
The environment is an
integral part of the academic programme in the Primary Years Programme at CIS.
Students have studied the environment and what can be done to make a
difference. Areas of study include water conservation, sustainability, waste
audits and much more. CIS conducted their own COP 15 conference in school where
they held a Skype conference and Eco Game Show with a school in Atlanta, USA.
One of the most successful events of the school year was the Trashion Show,
where student models showcased fashionable clothing they had created out of
trash. A greenhouse made of plastic bottles is under construction and students
have established a compost site for food waste.
This range of activities has
demonstrated CIS’ environmentally awareness and the presentation and raising of
the Green Flag by Mayor Hans Toft was a highlight of this commitment and the
environmental work that will be continued.
School Director Peter Wellby
remarked that greening the school is woven throughout the Strategic Plan. In
his speech, Mayor Toft called CIS “a worthy recipient of the Green Flag”, and
noted that the school involved almost all its students in its greening initiatives,
which is much more than was required. Mayor Toft called CIS’ efforts an
inspiration to the local community.
