CIS News & Public Events

The Learning Assistant Program is now up and running. Students last year were grateful for all the help and support they received through their LAP volunteers.

We have a great group of volunteers in place for this school year, however we are still seeking  volunteers! No formal teaching experience is required; with a little extra time we as adults can make a world of difference for a child.

This year we have been provided with a new LAP room with loads of sunlight. It is a room with great working space and holds all our LAP resources and materials.

At the moment there is an immediate need for volunteers able to support in German, one or two 40 minute session(s) per week.

To volunteer, or to obtain further information please contact:

The renovation work on our building is proceeding well and more or less on schedule.  The work being done includes surface work on the building’s exterior, new windows, and even a new roof!  Our primary school building is not affected by any of the renovation work (except for a bit of dust).  MYP and DP students will be minimally affected as the work being done is external – the only classrooms that will be temporarily closed are a few on the top (D) floor of our main building.  We are scheduling all the classes that are normally taught in the affected classrooms in other locations. This will in particular impact the Art classes for the MYP and DP.

Neither the parent or staff parking lots will be affected by the renovation work.

The drop off zone (known as the kiss and ride zone) area in front of the main building will be functioning normally for the start of school.

How to use the Kiss & Ride Zone at Copenhagen International School
The Kiss & Ride Zone inside the wall of Copenhagen International School is there to provide a secure area where, in particular, the youngest children can be dropped off. On a normal morning more than 60 cars will pass through the gates and it important that certain ground rules are observed to ensure that the drop off process is safe and fast.

Therefore the following guidelines are to be followed:
When using the Kiss & Ride Zone, schoolbags or other items the children are bringing should be placed ready inside the passenger area of the car. This is to avoid time lost by the driver having to stop the car, exit the car; walk to the boot to take out bags, etc.; say goodbye; and go back into the car before driving out of the Kiss & Ride Zone. Instead, the children must exit the car with their things and close the door. In this way the driver can leave the Kiss & Ride Zone without undue delay.

Inside the Kiss & Ride Zone there is a small area along the wall towards Hellerupvej where 4 – 5 cars can be parked. This area is reserved for those with the smallest children and/or babies. If you would like permission to use this area to park in order to help your child safely out and inside the school, please ask for a permit to put in your front window while parking. Contact the PYP administrative coordinator Mette Trock Jansen mtj@cisdk.dk or Business Office, phone 39 46 33 13 or email business@cisdk.dk

The parking area is not for long-term parking and for safety reasons the gates will be closed by 8:40.

We appreciate your cooperation in making the school a more secure place for everybody.

The Green Flag, an environmental acknowledgement awarded by “Friluftsrådet” was raised by Gentofte Mayor Hans Toft before a large crowd of parents, students and teachers at Copenhagen International School, just before the summer break.

The flag raising was the culmination of much hard work lead by teachers Fintan Keenan, Faye McAuley, Simon Watkin and devoted parent volunteer Leslie Nogaret. CIS has been working for nearly two years towards it’s application for the Grønt Flag, a symbol of our membership as a Grøn Skole, part of a world wide organization of ECO Schools.

The environment is an integral part of the academic programme in the Primary Years Programme at CIS. Students have studied the environment and what can be done to make a difference. Areas of study include water conservation, sustainability, waste audits and much more. CIS conducted their own COP 15 conference in school where they held a Skype conference and Eco Game Show with a school in Atlanta, USA. One of the most successful events of the school year was the Trashion Show, where student models showcased fashionable clothing they had created out of trash. A greenhouse made of plastic bottles is under construction and students have established a compost site for food waste.

This range of activities has demonstrated CIS’ environmentally awareness and the presentation and raising of the Green Flag by Mayor Hans Toft was a highlight of this commitment and the environmental work that will be continued.

School Director Peter Wellby remarked that greening the school is woven throughout the Strategic Plan. In his speech, Mayor Toft called CIS “a worthy recipient of the Green Flag”, and noted that the school involved almost all its students in its greening initiatives, which is much more than was required. Mayor Toft called CIS’ efforts an inspiration to the local community.

CIS Sailing Club is open to CIS students between the ages of 9 and 16 for the 2010 sailing season. The club offers sailing training and practice in the Optimist dinghy for beginners, in the Feva boats for the experienced sailors, and in the Yngling boats, a three-person keel boat, for the advanced sailors.

If you would like to know more about the CIS Sailing Club, please send an email to the CIS Sailing Club Chairman, Qi Zhang, email address qizhang@cisdk.dk.

We look forward to hearing from you!
