CIS Athletics Aims, Vision and Philosophy
The Copenhagen International

School Athletics Program provides opportunity for students to develop their potential in athletic activities while participating in a competitive and fun environment. To achieve this goal, CIS is a member of NECIS, the Northern European Council of International Schools. NECIS organizes international tournaments where schools from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg meet to compete in a variety of sports.
Through the NECIS Athletics Program, we foster in students the life skills of collaboration, competition, teamwork, leadership and sportsmanship. Finally, the program seeks to educate students about the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle.
How are students selected for teams?
NECIS is open to all students from PYP 5 to DP 2. The teams are divided up into levels determined by age: Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 (Junior Varsity) and Under 19 (Varsity). The student's level is determined by his or her age on the 1st of September of the academic year. Since NECIS is a competitve sports program, providing tournaments in which international schools meet, team numbers are restricted. Therefore, students who wish to participate must compete for selection to the CIS teams. Coaches use the following criteria to guide them when making their final selection:
The NECIS tournaments restrict the size of teams for entry into the tournaments.
Football teams: 15
Volleyball teams: 12
Basketball: 12
Softball: 12 (6 boys, 6 girls)
Swimming PYP 5 - DP 2: 60
Track and Field PYP 5 - DP 2: 60
Rugby: 12
Tennis: 10 (5 boys, 5 girls)
Once the tournament team has been selected, it is up to the discretion of the coach whether to allow those who are not selected to continue attending practices. In the past it has been possible to set up developmental groups in cases where there has been a large number of students interested in a particular sport within an age group.
Families are expected to contribute to the cost of attending NECIS tournaments. If this presents a financial challenge, please contact the Athletics Director to discuss options.
